Pictured is the Youth Prevention Team for STACC (Students Taking Action for Community Change). Theses students recently returned from the Spring Youth Forum in Grand Mound, where they gave a presentation on what their team has been doing to make a difference in their community. There were over 40 schools in attendance at this year's forum and Republic's team qualified for finals! The teams final presentation was given in front of 300 youth and multiple advisors. Republic STACC represented our school well and we are very proud of them! Nice work team! GOOOO TIGERS!

Excitement was high as students were given the unique opportunity to get an up close look at a number of race cars from the Eagle Track Raceway. Students were given the chance to sit in the driver's seat of the cars and a few of the students were even given the chance to work as a pit crew and change a tire while racing against the clock. A big shout out goes to Jason Pestka, Angela Menneke, Rob Adams, and TJ Larsen for sharing their passion and expertise and for making this a great experience for the students of Republic Schools. Even Mr. and Mrs. Finley enjoyed the fun as well.

Miss King's 3rd grade ROAR trip took students to Stonerose fossil dig site for their last adventure of the year. After the dig, each student was informed on the amazing fossil discovery they uncovered while at the site. Another big thank you goes out to Travis Wellman, Andy Brockett, and Simon Curtis for their help with another great learning opportunity for the students of Republic Elementary.

May 10, 2023 Republic School Staff, Students, and Families: At approximately 11:45 AM today (May 10th), our school administration received report of an alleged threat to the Curlew School District. All buildings were placed on a “soft” lockdown (building entrances and exits were secured) per the Sherriff’s Department. The Sherriff’s Department responded accordingly to Curlew and promptly performed an inspection of Republic’s facilities to ensure students and staff were safe here as well. We quickly received notice that similar threats were being made to school districts across the eastern side of our state, following the known “swatting hoax.” According to the Washington School Safety Center, “Swatting is defined as a false report of an ongoing emergency or threat of violence intended to prompt an immediate tactical law enforcement response. Swatting is not a new threat; it has evolved over the last decade or so and includes a range of tactics and techniques used to cause false public alarm and divert law enforcement resources to a hoax threat. Certain incident types and tactics have tended to receive more media coverage than others. Swatting scenarios include bomb threats, active shooter scenarios, threats of an imminent shooting rampage, hostage scenarios, and threats involving chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosives agents.” At 12:55 PM the lockdown was lifted. Law enforcement has confirmed no credible threats to our school campuses, and all schools will continue operating as usual. We want to assure our families that our first priority is the safety of our students and staff. In the event of any reported threat at our schools, emergency services will respond and our schools will follow the established safety procedures while determining the credibility of the threat. We ask that you talk with your children about how hoaxes like these can cause trauma to their peers and potentially prevent our community’s first responders from responding to real emergencies. We continue to encourage our students and school community to report anything that could constitute a threat to school safety.

State testing for Middle School and High School students will begin on May 9th. Grades 7, 8, 10, and 11 will begin testing in math and then ELA (English and Reading). The student class schedule will not be the same on testing dates. It is our desire and expectation that all students continue to have regular attendance, even if they are not in a testing grade. Preparation for testing is important; ensuring that your students are getting plenty of rest and nutrition is a very important step. If you have questions about testing, please reach out to us.

Republic 4th grade students were given the incredible opportunity to join Keller Schools on their annual camas root gathering event. Tribal elder and teacher Billie Jo Bray spent time with Republic students showing them about how to properly dig the root, how to care for the land where the camas root grows, and how to clean and prepare them. The Republic School District and the ROAR program is so grateful that we were able to join this outing. We would like to thank Karen Neal and Dolly Brudevold, who organized the event. And a very special thank you to tribal elder Billie Jo Bray who shared her vast knowledge and insight on indigenous plants and cultural traditions.

College and Career Fair a huge success! On Thursday, April 27th, grades 7-12th, were given the opportunity to visit several colleges (EWU, WSU, Whitworth, and Carrington College) and over 25 various companies all while never leaving Republic's backyard! Companies included Kinross, Washington State Patrol, Boise Cascade, the US Forest Service, Border Patrol, Hetland Electric, Northside Heating & Air, Ferry County Memorial Hospital, Ferry County PUD, STCU and Vaagen Bros, just to name a few! Students met with guest presenters at booths set up in the gym and participated in small group presentations in classrooms throughout the day. Students were able to submit their questionnaires into a raffle for the chance to win gift certificates or prizes from local business. Thank you to everyone who shared career opportunities with our students and the business who donated prizes for the raffle. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Miss Starr's 2nd grade class ventured to The Ferry Country Conservation District greenhouse to learn about soil. Students were shown how use tools the conservation district uses to collect soil samples. Students then collected four different soil samples and used their observation skills to determine which soil is the best for growing plants. Students also received a quick lesson on local tree species and also how to measure the diameter of trees. THANK YOU to Mckenzi Coleman and Dave Hedrick from the Conservation District for their help in planning this ROAR Adventure and giving their time to the students of Republic School District.
